How did Ping Pong get its name?

There are only so many times one can play Piggy Squeak or Up Jenkins before boredom sets in. Wouldn't you agree?

This was the 1880s. The Victorians were an inventive bunch with time on their hands. They were perfectly capable of making-up a new game for their after-dinner antics. And so they set about gathering useful items from the smoking room to play with. Funnily enough, there was a healthy supply of champagne corks and an Everest of cigar boxes! What in tarnation could they do with them? And so it was, in this very situation, that our beloved Ping Pong was conceived.

Taking inspiration from Lawn Tennis, the table was cleared and a stack of Dickens formed the net. It was dazzling to discover that the bounce of a cork, and a cigar-box-racquet could create the perfect indoor volley.

Huzzah ! Three Cheers for the new parlour game.... and it shall be called Tennis-on-the-Table. Okay, that doesn't sound great. How about Parlour Tennis? Gossima? Pom Pom? Eureka chaps! Lets call it Whiff Whaff!
